February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month
Nearly 1 in 11 female and approximately 1 in 15 male high school students report having experience physical dating violence in the last year.
1.5 million high school students will experience physical abuse by a dating partner in one year.
26% of women and 15% of men who were victims of sexual violence, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime, first experienced violence by that partner before age 18.
Golden House connects to teens in the community by providing programming and services to local high schools and colleges. By remaining flexible in our approach, we are able to serve far and wide in the community.
One teen’s story…
Golden House became connected with teen parent, Amy*, through a social worker at a local high school. Amy dropped out of school and was struggling in her relationship with the child’s father. She was working towards ending the relationship with the child’s father due to his unhealthy and controlling ways. Golden House was able to provide Amy with diapers and wipes for her child, financial assistance for her new apartment and legal assistance navigating child custody. Amy has shown incredible resilience and tenacity in dealing with a very heavy situation at such a young age. We are happy to report that she is working towards finishing high school and living independently with her child and continues to remain connected to Golden House.
