Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month: The Statistics

Every February, young people and their loved ones join together across the country for a national effort to raise awareness about the issue of teen dating violence through Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month (TDVAM).

This annual, month-long push focuses on advocacy and education to stop dating abuse before it starts (Love Is Respect).

The Statistics

1 in 3 teens in the US will experience physical, sexual, or emotional abuse from someone they’re in a relationship with before they become adults.

20.9% of female high school students and 13.4% of males report being physically or sexually abused by a dating partner.

1 in 15 children are exposed to intimate partner violence each year, and 90% of these children are eyewitnesses to this violence.

50% of youth reporting dating violence/rape also reported attempting suicide.

Women aged 16 to 24 experience domestic violence at the highest rate.

43% of college women report experiencing violent or abusive dating behaviors.

Golden House employs a Prevention Coordinator who works in the community, with middle and high schools, colleges, and community agencies to provide domestic violence education. The programs provide awareness on the topic of domestic violence, but also equip participants with skills to have a healthy relationship, how to help their friends, and learn what red flags and warning signs are.
